US Army develops AI counter-drone shield built first in simulation

The US Army is developing a new AI system to detect and identify hostile drones before they threaten infantry troops.

The effort is being carried out with Duality AI and centers on a program called AI Target Detection and Recognition, or AiTDR. The Army is taking a digital-first approach. The system will be built entirely in simulation before moving to real-world hardware. The goal is to give frontline soldiers an added layer of protection against small aerial threats that are becoming harder to track and defeat on modern battlefields. The project also reflects a broader shift in defense development toward synthetic data, virtual environments and faster software iteration.

At its core, AiTDR is intended to use artificial intelligence for target detection and recognition, helping troops spot and identify hostile drones earlier in an engagement. Building the system in simulation allows developers to generate a wide range of operational scenarios without waiting for full physical test infrastructure. That can speed model training, compress test cycles and reduce reliance on slower hardware-led development. As low-cost drones spread and evolve quickly, the Army appears to be looking for a way to update counter-drone capability at a pace closer to the threat.

No deployment timeline was disclosed. Still, the program signals that simulation is moving from a supporting role to the center of military system design. If successful, AiTDR could shape how future battlefield protection tools are developed, cutting time to fielding and strengthening defenses against one of the fastest-growing threats in combat.
