Terra A1 interceptor drone enters operational deployment in Ukraine

Terra Drone has started operational deployment of its Terra A1 interceptor drone in Ukraine. The system has been delivered to a Ukrainian military unit for evaluation in real combat conditions through Amazing Drones, the company’s Ukraine-based investee.

The rollout follows a phased path widely used in Ukraine. New equipment goes first to a frontline unit for field testing. Wider adoption depends on performance under combat conditions. Terra Drone and Amazing Drones jointly announced the platform on March 31. The Terra A1 is aimed at a central problem in modern air defense: the high cost of using traditional systems to stop low-cost attack drones.

Terra Drone says conventional air defense interceptions can cost several hundred million yen each. By contrast, interceptor drones operate at about JPY 300,000 to JPY 1 million per unit. The Terra A1 has a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 32 km. The company says that exceeds the typical speed of Shahed-type attack drones, making the system suitable for countering one of the most persistent aerial threats seen in Ukraine. A commander of an anti-Shahed unit in the Chernihiv Region Defense Forces said the drone was easy to control, handled smoothly in sharp turns, and provided clear daytime target imagery through its digital camera.

The Terra A1 was designed for rapid deployment and simple field operation. Its electric propulsion system reduces noise and heat signatures, a combination intended to improve survivability and stealth during interception missions. Terra Drone says a single unit can perform surveillance, detection, and interception within one 15-minute flight. Feedback from operators in Ukraine is being fed directly into the development cycle to refine the aircraft based on battlefield use rather than lab testing alone.

Terra Drone plans to scale mass production if the system proves effective against Shahed-type threats. The company is also considering expansion into other regions facing similar attacks from low-cost drones. The deployment underlines a broader shift in air defense doctrine, as militaries look for cheaper, faster, and more scalable ways to counter mass drone warfare.
