Russian Orlan UAV spotted carrying FPV drones for short-range strikes

A Russian Orlan reconnaissance drone has been spotted carrying FPV drones, signaling a new short-range attack role.

Images circulated by Ukrainian officials appear to show a medium-range Orlan UAV flying over Ukraine with FPV drones mounted under its wings. Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Sergey "Flash" Beskrestnov said the aircraft photographed had already released one FPV drone. The sighting suggests Russia may be adapting a familiar reconnaissance platform into an airborne launch system for smaller attack drones.

The key change is operational flexibility. In addition to surveillance, the Orlan could serve as both a carrier and a signal relay for FPV drones. That setup could extend the effective range of quadcopter strike drones by pushing them closer to the target area before launch and by improving control links in contested environments. Ukrainian media said Russia had previously used Geran and Gerbera drones as drone carriers, but the Orlan differs because it is a reusable platform.

The development underscores a broader battlefield shift toward combining reconnaissance, communications support and low-cost attack drones on a single airframe. If fielded more widely, the concept could expand the reach of FPV strikes, complicate air defense calculations and add pressure on Ukrainian frontline positions.
