Gremsy, Nokia team up to add advanced EO/IR payloads to industrial 4G and 5G drone networks

Gremsy and Nokia have formed a global technology partnership to integrate Gremsy’s VIO and ORUS-L payloads with the Nokia Drone Networks platform.

The tie-up targets industrial and public safety drone missions that require secure connectivity and fast access to live aerial data. The combined offering is aimed at infrastructure inspection, industrial surveillance, tactical response and Drones as a First Responder deployments. By linking Gremsy imaging systems to Nokia’s drone-in-a-box platform, the companies plan to deliver electro-optical and infrared sensing, real-time video streaming and AI-enabled functions over secure 4G and 5G networks. They said the integrated payloads are expected to be available in the second half of 2025, following international demonstrations that began earlier this year.

ORUS-L is the larger of the two systems. It is a rugged three-axis gimbal built for long-endurance drones and robotic platforms. It includes onboard AI, sensor fusion and a multi-sensor package with 4K electro-optical imaging, 30x zoom, night vision, thermal imaging and a laser rangefinder. VIO is a more compact EO/IR payload designed for mapping, inspection and safety operations. It combines optical and thermal zoom, high-sensitivity temperature detection of 50 mK or less, a 3,000-meter laser rangefinder and AI features such as object detection and auto-zoom. Together, the payloads broaden the mission set available on Nokia’s connected drone platform without changing the underlying communications backbone.

Nokia Drone Networks is a turnkey drone-in-a-box system built around 4G and 5G connectivity for autonomous operations, remote piloting and live data transfer. The platform uses an open architecture that supports third-party payload integration and is already deployed in more than 20 countries for public safety, search and rescue and critical infrastructure inspection. For Gremsy, the partnership puts its imaging payloads into an established networked drone ecosystem designed for demanding field use. For Nokia, adding Gremsy expands its open payload strategy and strengthens the platform’s position in markets that need AI-assisted aerial sensing, secure transmission and scalable remote operations.

The deal underscores a broader shift in the commercial UAV market away from standalone aircraft and toward integrated systems that combine airframes, sensors, AI and mobile networks. If the rollout stays on schedule, the joint solution could help utilities, industrial operators and emergency services cut response times, improve situational awareness and scale autonomous drone operations across critical sites from late 2025.
